Mark Canuel

I am a Professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I teach classes on British Literature, Romanticism, and critical theory. My research and publications focus on political theory, aesthetics, and literary form. I explore the ways in which literary art is central to the conceptualizing and reshaping of modern institutions. I love to write and talk about these subjects, so please be in touch with inquiries about articles, reviews, and speaking at mcanuel@uic.edu.
I have numerous other interests in addition to academic work and writing. I am an amateur classical pianist and love the work of Bach, Chopin, and Brahms in particular; I’ve been involved in our local “Thirsty Ears” music festival, and hope to find new ways of supporting it. I also enjoy the opera, concerts of all kinds (jazz, pop, blues, and more), movies (especially a good rom com, mystery, or thriller), and sometimes–but rarely–live theater. When I’m not engaging in these activities, I’m probably going on a vacation somewhere or (even more likely) hanging around the house with my partner and our dog.
